Finding a reputable online marketing partner
If you're anything like me you probably get unsolicited emails every day offering to help you with your website, but can those people actually help you? And what about marketing agencies? There's loads of them and their prices span the whole spectrum, with people that'll promise you a top ranking position for the price of a Costa Coffee each week, and others that won't promise anything but charge hundreds of pounds.
I'm gonna mention up front that my brother Kevin is an online marketer who I've worked with loads over the years, and I would definitely recommend him, but this isn't just a long winded advertisement for Kev, it hopefully contains useful information that you can use to evaluate anyone offering to help you do well on Google.
Spammy Emails
First off, let's talk about those unsolicited, spammy emails I mentioned before - if you're lucky enough not to get them I'm jealous, but these will generally say something like "We can get the top spots on Google!" and will imply that your website isn't ranking well. Let's be clear - these are spam emails and the sender hasn't even visited your website. They just ran a script which found emails online, like on your contact page, and they sent the same email to every address they found. I would really doubt that these spammers would do anything at all if you transferred them some money, other than try and get more money out of you. Good marketing companies never, ever send cold emails to random businesses - their work comes from word of mouth and reputation. Suffice to say, you should bin these emails when they come in - don't even reply, because showing any interest at all will just invite more spam emails.
Very Cheap Backlinks
Next up we've got the actual businesses who might do SOMETHING for your money - how do we tell which of these are offering something decent? Again, lets start with the shadiest of the bunch - people you can find on Fiverr.com and other freelancing websites who offer to build thousands of backlinks for a few quid. These guys are doing what's called "black hat" search engine optimisation, which means stuff that Google really hates and could penalise you for if you get caught. To make thousands of backlinks for very low prices they rely on computer scripts that will spam your website name into the comment forms of other sites, or into profiles they make on random message boards. It's all automated, and there's nothing specific to your business about the process, they just pass the name and link through to a script and then the script spams the link everywhere. The best case scenario with these very low-quality links is that Google just discounts them altogether and your money was wasted, but the worst case scenario is that Google penalises your site, and you can only find out about that penalty if you've got Google Search Console set up and remember to check it. Getting penalised can be really painful, because there's basically no way for you to remove these links once they're up. It's worth bearing in mind that getting a single backlink from a reputable source will take some time - so you can only get thousands by either spamming, or by going viral somehow.
Pay Per Click
Okay, so we've ruled out the spammers and the cheap backlink builders, but who else is out there? Well, one other thing I see advertised very often is people who can help you with "pay per click" adverts. These companies aren't spammy, but they're usually very overpriced and not at all transparent. They generally work by setting up advertisements on Google's Adwords platform for you, and then they add their own margin on top of the adverts they buy on your behalf. What they don't tell you is that setting up Adwords is really easy, and that once it's running it's basically totally hands-off, which means they're taking money off you each month and doing literally nothing for it. They can never be transparent with you about how much of their fees goes on adverts and how much just goes straight into their pockets, because you'd quite rightly find it pretty scandalous.
If you do want to buy paid advertisements then I advise giving Adwords a bash yourself first before seeking external help. Google make it really, really easy to manage, especially if you choose their "Adwords Express" program. You control the budget yourself, and Google will give you a few hundred pounds of spends just for signing up, and it's likely that you'd get business to your site for just a few quid a month. If you do end up fancying some help - by all means search it out, but you should probably have a bash first yourself. Remember to keep an eye on Google's suggestions and whether they'll increase your monthly spend, and a top tip from Kev - you probably want to appear in the "Search Network" where you appear in search results, and not the "Display Network" which lists your advert on random sites. Searchers are much more likely to convert into sales than people browsing some other site.
The thing to remember about Adwords is that if you ever stop paying for them, you're kinda back to square one. No amount of spending money on Adwords will help your site rank better on Google. It's a good way to get traffic to your site in the immediate term but I'd probably advise trying to improve your ranking in the organic results as a long term strategy.
Legit Copywriters
So now lets talk about the people who offer to improve your content and market your site, who aren't just outright spammers or adding their own markup on paid advertisements. First, financials. The minimum wage in the UK is about twelve quid per hour at the time of writing, an average hourly rate for a copywriter is about fifty quid, and a good online marketer charges about a grand a month minimum. It's important to keep this in mind when you're evaluating marketing companies, because if they're charging you thirty pound a month then you can't realistically expect them to dedicate much time to your business. It's likely that a company charging such low prices is taking spammy or borderline spammy shortcuts which might bite you in the bum in the long run.
Either that or they're based in a country where thirty quid goes a lot further than it does in the UK - maybe they're in India, for example. I'd always be quite wary of having someone from so far away write content for your site, because it's unlikely that they'll write in a way which feels authentically local to your site's visitors.
You should always expect total transparency from any marketing agency you choose because they're working for your business and their actions could make or break you. This means they should tell you exactly what they're going to do for the money. If they're charging thirty quid and they're going to spend half an hour each month looking over your site and fixing some typos and adding some links between pages, then great! At least they're being realistic about what can be achieved in half an hour.
If they won't tell you what they're up to it's probably because it's something you wouldn't like!
What Legitimate Marketers Actually Do
So what are some jobs that a legitimate marketer might do for you, and how much could you expect them to cost?
Copywriters are, or at least should be, really good at researching your products and services and then writing text which describes them nicely and is easily understood by search engines. In an hour you could probably expect them to write the pages for one or maybe two products or categories if writing it all manually. Nowadays it's normal for copywriters to use AI to increase the amount of content they can provide to you for your money, but they'll prompt the AI with plenty of your business details and will edit its output to make sure it reads nicely.
Legit marketers might also offer backlink building services, but because they're not just spamming your website to unsuspecting blogs they're probably doing things like writing press releases for your local news websites, or contacting businesses you've worked with asking for a link, or finding high quality spots online where your business can be submitted. These are all very time consuming jobs and I'd be well impressed if a marketer could get more than a few good backlinks sorted within an hour.
Copywriters and legitimate marketers will never promise you a certain ranking position on Google, because they know that the only way to guarantee a high ranking spot is to spam your website all over the internet, and doing this is a great way to get penalised by Google. Instead they'll charge you for specific work they've done, things like writing 500 words, or writing and sending a press release, or tidying up two categories - you get the idea. They should give advice about what things they think will help push you up the rankings the most, but like with everything with Google it's about doing the right things and having faith in the long term outcome - there are no shortcuts.
In Summary
Hopefully this gives you lots of ideas about how to evaluate a copywriter or marketer! To summarise, you want them to be transparent with the work they're doing, and it should largely revolve around improving the content on your site and building reputable backlinks. You should be very wary of anything very cheap because these are skilled jobs that pay decent wages, and you shouldn't trust anyone who sends you a spammy email because reputable people don't advertise themselves like that.
Okay, so as promised, back onto my brother Kevin. If you don't want to hear a plug for Kev you should stop listening now!
KevinBurkeServices.com
Kev is a copywriter and marketer who has been doing this about 15 years and really knows his stuff. He studied journalism and previously worked in a news agency, which means he knows all about press releases and the ways to get the local media talking about your business. He's a great writer and knows a tonne about the event hire industry specifically after working with me at the Bouncy Castle Network. He's totally transparent about the work he does and how much it will cost, with a minimum charge of just one hundred pounds, and he can also evaluate your existing site and tell you where you're falling short. If you're struggling to write compelling content for your site, then I think employing Kev to help you represents great value for money and I would definitely advise employing him or someone like him.
His website is at KevinBurkeServices.com. Tell him that Stef sent you!
