Fast, affordable websites you own

Most business websites just need to share information with visitors - your services, your menu, your contact details. They don't need expensive, complicated platforms to do that well.

Platforms like WordPress, Wix, and Squarespace are designed to do everything, but most businesses only need a fraction of what they offer. The result? Websites that are slow to load, expensive to host, and hard to leave when you want to.

I take a different approach. I build clean, fast, mobile-friendly websites tailored to your business. Because they're built efficiently, they load fast (pages feel instant once you're browsing, thanks to background preloading), cost very little to host (I can host typical small brochure sites for £10/month, or £5/month for charities and other discounted groups - no support included; see my prices page for managed hosting with support), and you own all the code - so you're never locked in.

You don't need to be technical — if you can edit a document, you can update your site.

I build these sites with Eleventy, a modern static site tool, so pages are lean and fast — but what matters to you is the result: a website that loads fast, gives you a solid technical foundation for search, and is easy to update.

How do I edit the site?

You can update your site through a simple admin interface (PagesCMS.org) or directly as text files on your computer. It's simpler than it sounds - you'll be changing plain text, not writing code. And everything is backed up automatically, so we can always undo any mistakes.

Can you tell me how it works?

I will happily explain every aspect of your site to you - from templating to stylesheets and anything else besides. My aim is for you to become confident in taking charge of your site's growth, and adding new areas to its content and code yourself.

To really succeed online you need to know some fundamentals about structuring your website and updating its pages - and understanding how your site is built is a key part of that.

If you're in Prestwich we can even meet over a coffee and cake in a local cafe of your choice to dig into specifics of how to update your site. Bring a laptop along!

Will I rank well on Google?

Google rewards websites that load quickly and are easy to navigate - exactly what these sites are built for. Fast-loading sites with clear content and contact forms give you a strong foundation for appearing in search results.

But a good website is just the starting point - ranking well also takes ongoing effort like writing useful content, building links from other sites, and keeping things up to date.

You'll get plenty of help with this if you host with me - I provide free marketing guides and videos plus personal support to help you implement them.

What is the process?

  1. I build your website using my tried-and-tested starter template, or a fully custom design
  2. Your content is stored in simple text files you can read and edit
  3. You can update the content yourself through a simple admin panel, or send me changes
  4. Backups happen automatically
  5. You get the full source code via GitHub - it's yours (and your repo can be private if you prefer)

Everything is built on my open source template and tools, so any web developer can work on your site in the future. You're never dependent on me - but you're welcome to stick around.

While you are more than welcome to host with me, you can also take your site to any hosting provider - and I'll make that process easy if you do.

What does it cost?

Like every job, I provide estimates and charge a flat hourly rate with a breakdown of everything involved. Here are some rough estimates for a typical business website:

  • 2 hours: Base setup
    • Creating an empty site
    • Backing it up via Git
    • Adding a CMS
    • Inviting you to the CMS
    • Auto-publishing to your static host of choice
  • 1-6 hours: Base template
    • Cloning an existing template and updating its text to fit your business, or creating a new template from scratch
  • 1-4 hours: Images
    • Cropping / resizing your images, sourcing designers
  • 1 hour: Domain names
    • Pointing your domain to its new host
  • 1 hour: Email setup
    • Setting up email accounts with your host of choice
  • 1-6 hours: Content
    • Populating your site content, sourcing copywriters

Not all of these stages will be necessary for every site, and you might be able to do some yourself - and I'll be there to guide you if you do.
